Can I change it? A: Yes, under certain conditions. You must meet with an academic advisor in the colleges that house any other majors you are considering. Your academic record will be evaluated to determine if you meet the Critical Tracking criteria for admission into the intended major.

In most cases, you can change your major before your freshman year starts. Often, you aren't required to even declare a major until the end of sophom*ore year. That being said, the process may vary depending on the college you'll be attending.

In general, the Common Application is designed to be completed one time and submitted to all of the colleges at once, or over a period of time. If you need to change information on a submitted application, you must contact the college's admissions office directly to ask how they would like you to proceed.

Countless students have changed their majors successfully. But before you change your major, explore another major through its lower-division courses. Changing your major is a lengthy process. Sometimes, you need to meet specific lower-division requirements before you can even declare that major.

When is it too late to change your major? College students can change majors at any point in their college career. However, the sooner you change your major, the less impact the change will have on your graduation date.

Please note that major changes are not processed immediately and can take some time. In order to see the Academic Success Coach(es) of your NEW major at Orientation, your major change must be processed at least 3 days prior to your Orientation date. We strongly encourage you to begin this process as early as possible.

If you do come to realize that the major you originally declared isn't going to be the right fit for you moving forward, it's time to choose something else to major in. You'll want to do this sooner rather than later, ideally before it's time to register for classes for your next semester or quarter.

Experts also discourage changing majors during junior or senior years, though it's technically possible for students to do so. Experts say the earlier students can make that change, the better. That way, they won't be so far along in a certain degree path that they have to take extra courses.

As we discussed above, if you put down a certain intended major, submitted your applications, then decide you want to change, you don't need to do anything in most cases. You'll likely be able to change your major at freshman orientation when you plan out your freshman schedule with an advisor.

If the readmission request includes a change of major, you must have the support of your prior major department, and if applicable, must meet the Major-Specific Admission Requirements for that major.

Except for a few specialty programs like engineering, premed, fine arts, and honors college, you usually have free rein to change your mind and your major. Check with your academic advisor early and often (if your scholarship is dependent upon your field of study, check with financial aid, too, before you change).
